The American Quarter Horse Association, for example, states: “A chestnut horse’s coat has a brown tint, with the most extreme colour being an almost dark brown liver colour. What all the associations agree on is that a basic chestnut horse has no black points (points being the mane, tail, eyes and legs) and a reddish-brown coat that ranges.. While many horses have small white patches- such as the star, blaze, snip, and strip facial markings- pinto spots are more distinctive and cover a more significant portion of the body. Chestnut is one of the most frequently seen pinto base coat colors, along with black, bay, and brown. 19. Chestnut Tobiano.

A chestnut horse with flaxen mane and tail. Flaxen is a genetic trait in which the mane and tail of chestnut-colored horses are noticeably lighter than the body coat color, often a golden blonde shade. Manes and tails can also be a mixture of darker and lighter hairs. Certain horse breeds such as the Haflinger carry flaxen chestnut coloration as a breed trait.. Chestnut. Taking its name from the chestnut tree, the word chestnut (or castaneous as is occasionally used) is used to describe a horse that has a reddy brown body color and either a similar or lighter colored mane and tail. As you might expect the base color for all chestnut horses is red and, such, they don’t have any black markings.
